Agave Girl ~ Camille Austin

Long gone are the days when mezcal was referred to as Tequila’s unsophisticated cousin. Mezcal and its multiple array of varietals have opened up our senses to an endless range of floral, herbal, spicy and citric notes (to name a few) that make it one of the most complex spirits in the world. In a society where some may think that mezcal is still considered a rustic and manly spirit, I am very pleased to say that I have come across a few ladies in the mezcal world that prove the contrary. One of those ladies is the amazing Camille Austin. Agave sisters at heart, I am very happy to have finally met Camille while she was spreading all the agave love in Mexico City last month during Tales on Tour.

camille austinCamille’s passion for hospitality began at a young age, while growing up in Cancun, one of Mexico’s most popular resorts and one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. After Hurricane Wilma hit in 2006, Camille moved to Miami where she became head bartender at Hakkasan Miami, and helped put together the US bar program for the first American outpost of the London-based high end Chinese eatery. Her expertise led her to move to New York City to become Bar Manager at Hakkasan NY and later Soho House NY. Her most recent and prominent role in the industry is as the U.S. Brand Ambassador for Montelobos Mezcal, sharing her passion for the complexity and history of agave spirits with everyone she encounters across her travels. Keep an eye out for this lady, as we will surely see her running her own bar in the future.

“My ultimate dream is to one day have a beautiful art-deco mezcaleria based around eclectic style, modern Mexico and females with a passion for all things agave.” – Camille Austin
